Description

Do you dream of finding a cortijo which retains its beautiful old character and features yet has been fully modernised and is light and airy?  If so you have just found one.

This stunning property would make an amazing family home or retreat space.  The room configuration and layout is super flexible.  I will try to do it justice with my description, photos and video, a visit will give you the real feel.  Perhaps it will fill you with excitement and joy as it did me when I listed it.

Entrance

Turning off the tarmac road into the driveway you see the carport which extends further to form the garage behind.  The front and side gardens are to your left, giving great privacy from the road.  There is ample parking for 3 or 4 cars, more if you open up the carport into the garage itself, the driveway also has a turning area.

Walking to the front of the house you go through the mature front garden which is planted with a wide range of edible fruit trees, grapefruit, dates, lemons and more.  There is also an olive tree which produces especially tasty fat olives.  The house walls are whitewashed with traditional Andalucian blue woodwork.  You walk under a Jasmine arch which will smell amazing in the evening, toward a bouganvillea clad front door.  The front door is tall and has two sets of doors, the original wooden ones inside and another set on the exterior which are metal rejas with detachable glass panels.  In the Winter you can keep the inner front door open and the glass will heat the home.  In the Summer you exchange the glass panels for flyscreen and a breeze enters the home and keeps it cool.

Grand cosy lounge

From the front door you enter the large lounge which retains it’s black and white tiled floor.  There is a woodburner which you can cook on as it has a pizza oven and top opening which is ideal for casseroles to simmer on.  The lounge space is homely yet striking, the painted morrocan style shelf and fireplace backdrop add warmth.  The large comfy sofas and seating nestle below a beamed ceiling.

Snug and Bar

Crossing the lounge you go through a door to the hallway which has been converted to a lovely snug and bar.  Ideal for a quiet drink before dinner, with light from the rear courtyard.   The bar is inside the old chimney which can be used again, if you wish, subject to removing the chimney cap.  There is also a large storage cupboard under the stone stairs

Kitchen and Utility Room

From the snug you go into the large utility space.  Currently housing just the washing machine but there is plenty of space for so much more.

The kitchen has rustic doors and a warm terracotta colour making it feel very homely.  Large enough to have a table and chairs in it and with lovely modern kitchen units.  The display shelves are underlit to highlight the styling.  There is space for a range style cooker, slimline dishwasher and tall fridge freezer.  It is possible for the appliances and furniture to be included, if you wish.

Rear Courtyard

The back door is original to the house including the old locking mechanism – sliding wooden “locks” and a metal and glass outer door.  The courtyard has brick tiling, a pergola with grapevines growing up over it and cute details of old Dovecote tiles high in the eaves.  The courtyard is large and has a dip pool (now needs some attention) in the corner which has been heated by pipes laid on the garage roof.  South facing but sheltered by the main house this courtyard is perfect to use year round.

To one side of the courtyard is a large workshop.  The corrugated roof has clear panels to make it easier and more pleasant to work inside.

Outdoor Kitchen/Dining Area

To the right of the kitchen is a large covered room set up for dining or entertaining.  This has views to the rear courtayard and side garden.  Great for Barbecues or entertaining.   There is also a diesel boiler for the central heating that runs throughout the property.  When the radiators aren’t needed the gas boiler can be used for the hot water.

Upstairs

Returning through the kitchen and snug we go upstairs.  The stone stairs are open and light.

Master Bedroom

In front of you as you get to the top of the stairs is the Master Bedroom.  The ceilings is high and dotted with log beams which are so common here in these parts of Spain.  It is how most roofs were built.  Here it is especially light and airy with two windows with views to the hills across the valley.

You can lie in bed gazing out at the views and the sunrise.  Again the double door concept is in use to help maintain a good temperature year around.  Through the master bedroom to the right there is a large storeroom/ loft which is making use of the old crop and grain store bins.

Returning to the landing we go to the mini lounge and Bedroom 2.

Bedroom 2

Once again light and airy spaces.  Bedroom 2 is a double and beautifully styled to feel sumptuous and luxurious.  It even has it’s own private terrace to the rear of the property.

Bedroom 3/ Artists studio

Across the landing is a passageway to Bedroom 3 which is currently being used as an artists studio.  Triple aspect including North light which is particularly good for art.  This room is huge so could be divided to be a bedroom and office/studio if you wished.

Rear terrace and parcel of land

Leading off from Bedroom 3 is a large upper terrace with views over the rear courtyard and side garden.

To the rear of the courtyard is another parcel of land which is flat and useable.  Perhaps you would put a pool or terrace up here..

Coming back indoors and heading toward the stairs there is a good sized family bathroom.

Upstairs Bathroom

The bathroom has twin stone sinks, loo, bidet and walk in shower.  It is througly modern yet in keeping with the warmth and history of the house.  The warm colours and textures bring a sense of Spain inside.

Further bedrooms and bathroom

Returning downstairs we retrace our steps to the lounge for the additional 3 bedrooms, bathroom and more.

Bedroom 4

Bedroom 4 is behind the fireplace.  A large spacious room with double bed and window to the front.

Bedroom 5 and 6

Through the lounge there is a mini lounge leading to Bedroom 5 which is a double and Bedroom 6 which is a single.  The mini lounge could be a playroom or walk in wardrobe if you prefer.  Such a lovely idea to have different spaces for people to have quiet time or to practice their hobbies.

Both the bedrooms and mini lounge have interesting old floors preserving the history of the house.

Bathroom

The bathroom has loo, basin, shower with wet room style floor and a large sunken bath.  There is even a candelabra above the bath for relaxing instyle.  Tiled in shades of blue to reflect the traditional Andalician style whilst retaining modern clean lines.

Side Garden and Garage

Accessed by returning through the front door and garden, kitchen or direct from the main parking area.  The side garden is again planted with mature plants, it also has an enclosure for chickens and a duck pond.  This could be converted to a pool area.  Close to the house but still private.

The garage has a concrete floor and could house several cars.  Below the floor is a 30,000 water tank which is used for the domestic water.  It is potable and has been independently tested.

Overall Situation

This house is situated between Las Pocicas and Saliente.  It is within easy walking distance of a bar/restaurant and a short drive of other bars, a municpal swimming pool (free or very cheap to go and open July and August) and a school.  Las Pocicas also has a couple of small shops for daily essentials.  The larger town of Albox is a 20 minute drive away.  Albox has banks, supermarkets, hardware stores etc. etc.

This is such a lovely house, if you are looking for something special this could be it.

We can only fit 15 photos on this listing – feel free to contact us to see others or to arrange a viewing.
